What are zodiac signs?

Zodiac signs are the twelve constellations found in the sky that represent different zones of the celestial system. In today's world we take a zodiac sign to mean the sign under which you are born. If you were born during specific dates at the end of January to the end of February you would be considered to be the zodiac sign Aquarius. Different months have different constellations attached to them. Zodiac signs have a very long and diverse history ranging from astrology to astronomy.

What is the history behind zodiac signs?

Long before there were mystical fortune tellers telling tales of woe and prosperity based on your zodiac sign, there were the constellations themselves. The stars were used as navigational devices for brave explorers searching through uncharted territory. Around 2 million BC in Mesopotamia Western astrology got its start but it was not until the Greeks and Ptolemy that our modern day horoscope gained in popularity and meaning. It was at this time that there was a cosmic influence that determined your bearing and stature in life.

What is astrology?

Astrology is studying of the constellations, stars and planets to determine how they impact a person's life and their habits. It is thought that the position of the stars, planets and cosmos has a direct bearing on a person's life at their time of birth. Whether or not this is true is still suspect as there is no real way to prove anything. But astrology has a wide following and people turn to their horoscopes daily to see what the stars have in store for them.

How do zodiac signs fit in with astrology?

There are twelve constellations across the sky that are said to represent twelve different personas. Constellations are groups of stars that resemble a shape. Each of these star clusters is given a name such as the constellation Leo. Interpreters of the constellations that read the zodiac sign are called astrologers. The astrologer takes the position of the stars at a person's birth and assigns them a zodiac sign. The zodiac sign is said to govern how the person will act, think and how things will happen to them over the course of their lifetime.

What are the twelve zodiac signs?

The twelve zodiac signs are grouped by the element that they represent. Fire is associated with Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Water has Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The element Earth is represented by Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. The final element is Air and it is represented by Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.

What are they represented by?

Okay, this is a long list so bear with us. Each of the zodiacs is represented by a figure, a thing or an animal in which the cluster of stars resembles. Aries is represented by the Ram. Taurus is of course the Bull. Gemini is the Twin. Cancer is the Crab and Leo is the Lion. Virgo is the Virgin, Libra is the Scales and Scorpio is the Scorpion. Sagittarius is the Archer, Capricorn is the Goat, Aquarius is the Water Bearer and finally Pisces is the Fish.

What are the different styles of zodiac?

There are three main types of zodiac used in the world today. The Western zodiac is the one we are most familiar with but there is also the Indian (Jyotish) zodiac and the Chinese zodiac. All three are still practiced widely and sometimes even used together to try to predict an outcome of someone's life or gauge their personality traits.

What is the Western zodiac?

The Western Zodiac is the twelve signs that we are most familiar with such as Aquarius, Sagittarius and Leo. But what is interesting is that these twelve signs no longer correspond with their same place in the sky. Why is this? It is because due to equinoxes the star positions have changed over time and the constellations are no longer where they originally were.

What is the Indian zodiac?

Indian zodiac signs or Jyotish as it is often called, still have the stars and their positions playing a prominent importance in this Hindu astrology. In Hindu astrology the sidereal zodiac is used versus the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. Sidereal is the position of the earth on its axis as it rotates and it keeps up with the position of the stars.

What is the Chinese zodiac?

The Chinese zodiac differs from Western and Indian (Hindu) zodiac by its use of associating a sign with one month and one year. The signs repeat themselves every twelve years. Each year is considered one of the signs. These signs are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar.
